Bonding with Pristine Nature at Sai Kung : Sharp Island Hike & Beach

Hap Mun Bay Beach right behind

Hong Kong never fails to surprise. You are in mid of concrete jungle now and in few hours you will be in midst of country parks, enjoying nature! Its dense, but then we get an opportunity to be near nature fastest without much planning required.

This long weekend, we headed to Sharp Island which is in Sai Kung. Sai Kung peninsula is located in the eastern part of Hong Kong. Sai Kung is one with most beautiful natural landscapes. This district boasts rich culture and heritage, buzzing town center, Geological Parks, pristine and clean Beaches, hiking trails with breath taking views, fishing village, remnants of Hakka culture and much more. It clearly has vast range of opportunities to explore well preserved area in Hong Kong.

Sai Kung Peninsula in East of Hong Kong

Its with little regret that given its less connectivity to MTR we were always skeptical to go to Sai Kung. However, thanks to bucket list we had made, we had to go there this time and a friend came to rescue who is avid Hiker and supported our plan to visit this place together.

Unlike what we thought, in reality it is very convenient and easy to reach Sai Kung or rather I should say Sai Kung Pier. This is actually the place that one needs to reach to start exploring the island and hikes and places around.

Our original plan was like this - Reach Sai Kung Pier from Mongkok, from here take a cab to Sai Wan Pavilion from where Macleheouse trail 2 begins -- then Hike till Ham Tin Beach. If enthusiasm permits then hike further till Tai Long Wan Beach. However this plan could not be executed given extreme rush due to long weekend and unavailability of taxis and long queues for bus.

So instead we decided to go to Sharp Island which is 20 minutes boat ride away. So I will try to simplify this route and how to reach the place, getting familiar with the area and options of what to do!

ProTip: Plan to visit Sai Kung during relatively off peak time. Since only way to reach Sai Kung is by road, on long weekends you may have to bear with long traffic.

How to Reach Sai Kung?

So if you are already staying in Hong Kong for a while, you may know that HK has small 16 seater Green and Red Bus which operates with minimal stops and works with rocket speed from one part of Hong Kong to another. You can check the schedules and the details of these buses on this website:16SeatsBus

There are multiple options as below to reach the Sai Kung Pier first, though last option is fastest and easiest:

  • To reach Sai Kung from Hong Kong island, its best to catch direct red bus from Causeway Bay

    • Cost: $22 for full journey, $16 to Hung Hom
    • Monday-Friday: 7pm to 12:30am
    • Weekends: 5pm to 12:30am

  • Take the MTR to Choi Hung (green line), get out at Exit C and get the 1A green minibus to Sai Kung.

  • Take the MTR to Hang Hau (purple line), get out at Exit B, walk to the bus terminus on your left, get the 101 green minibus.

  • Exit the MTR at Diamond Hill (green line) exit C and take bus 92.

  • From Kowloon Side - take bus from Mong Kong (44-45 Dundas Street nearest MTR is Yau Ma Tei A2 Exit). The bus ride from Mong Kong to Sai Kung Pier in usual day is 30 Mins ride but the day we went there was long traffic and it took us 1  hour to reach the Pier. Also, one has to account for the bus queue which was almost Half hour waiting when we reached there at 9.00 A.M.

    • Cost $12
    • Duration: Approx 30-40 minutes

More Details on Driving, parking, buses, etc are beautifully explained in HongKongLiving Website

Sai Kung Pier google map location is here : Sai Kung Pier

Pro Tip: Traveling to Sai Kung is really easy, just don't put your foot down thinking there is too much hassle to reach there! and, take a note, many people may get down at second last stop and not necessarily Red Bus Driver may know English so you should keep sitting and get down at last stop which is of Sai Kung Pier.

Once I am in Sai Kung Pier, where do I go?

Sai Kung Tourism Map. Source: Hongkongliving
So once you arrive at Sai Kung Pier, there are many different places to reach out to for hiking or to go to beach depending on your like and capability to hike :) Some of the very famous places are as shown in the map below. The synopsis of each i will write further.

1. Tai Long Sai Wan:

The area is made up of four beaches and Tai Long Wan is last and most beautiful one, but Sai Wan is one of the quieter ones and perfect for those looking for a quiet afternoon. Accessible by boat or sampan or by hiking Stage 2 of the MacLehose Trail. This beach has few kiosks. One can move ahead further on hike of about 2 hours ahead to reach final stage of Tai Long Wan Beach.

If one decides to hike further  from Sai Wan beach, it connects to Ham Tin beach (about 30 to 40 minutes). Ham Tin connects to Tai Wan (a further 15 minutes) and then Tung Wan (a further 30 minutes), which are the two more remote beaches, with no man made facilities, restaurants or toilets. Offcourse, farther you go more quiet and serene it becomes. The water is cleaner and a dip is must!

P.S. Maclehose Trail has 10 different routes covering 100 kms stretch of new territories and is rated as Dream trail by National Geographic in its recent 20 Dream Trail list in the World! More Details for the same here: Youth.Gov.HK

Pro Tip: While returning from Tung Wan, one has to hike back till Sai Wan beach and from here you can take a boat ride back to Sai Kung Pier (Costs approx 150 HKD per person) instead of hiking back till Sai wan pavilion. Though, if weather is not best be prepared to hike back.

Source: discoverhongkong. This trek begins from East Dam and ends at Pak Tam Au. But this also shows as described above path from Sai Wan pavillion to Sai Wan beach to Ham tin and further.

2. Trio Beach:

It is most easily reachable in Sai Kung. Its an easy 30 mins hike from Hebe Haven (Pak Sha Wan) or can take small boat ride at Hebe Haven.

3 & 4. Hap Mun Bay Beach & Sharp Island

Located on Sharp Island, known as Half Moon Bay also. It is located in UNESCO Global Geopark having unique rock formations and picturesque scenery. You have to take the small boat ride from the Sai Kuing Pier to Sharp Island. It costs HKD 30 return ticket. The boat rides every 1 hour so check you schedule and be prepared accordingly. Though there are many ferry operators and almost all give similar rates so ypu can pick one which suits your timing. But you got to return with same ferry service so better to note down their timings.

You can either go directly to Hap Mun Bay Beach by renting boat and then hike from there to sharp island. Or you can go by boat to Sharp Island and hike from there to Hap Mun Bay Beach. But in second option you can come back to Sharp island only by Hike. So if you want to save effort of hiking to and fro, you can go to hap mun bay beach by boat and hike back to Sharp Island. It took us approx 1.5 hours of hike from Sharp Island to Hap Mun Bay Beach one way. But be rest assured that this hike is all worth it for the extravagant views that it promises.

Spanning just 2.5km in length, Sharp Island is a small island within the geopark that is home to unique attractions, including the comically dubbed ‘pineapple bun’ rock formations.  If a visit coincides with low tide, the tombolo presents itself to walk directly onto nearby Kiu Tau Island, while a short hike enables visitors to walk from one side of the island to the other. (As Indian hearing Ram stories, I could relate it with Ram setu) It was so suprising to see bridge litterally appearing in  front of you during low tide ;)

Pro Tip: Stock up for food and water from Sai Kung Pier or from kiosk at sharp island on arrival. The hike is not too difficult but its little steep and not covered with many trees which makes it little hard especially if you hike under scorching sun. So carry atleast 1.5 lts of water each and some food.

Given the closure of main beaches due to covid, hap mun bay beach was closed but we found a small little beach just across the main beach. You have to get down on the rocks and keep walking towards left and u will see a very small little beach. It was very rocky and not best for a dip also unfortunately people preferred throwing their trash here nonetheless it was overall a beautiful experience.

Just above the beach there is small park area with public toilets where we found lot of people setting up camps and they were gonna spend 2 days right there! So just in case if u wish to do so!!!

5. Un Kong Group:

It is located just south of the High Island Peninsula.  It is made up of three islands —Wang Chau, Basalt Island and Bluff Island. They’re best known for the unique arches and caves that have been carved into the land by years of wear and tear at the hands of the sea.One needs to hire a boat to reach this specific island.

6. High Land:

High Island is  home to a historic Tin Hau temple (built in dedication to the sea goddess), a fishing district and seafood restaurant. There is road access to the northern tip of High Island for those looking for direct access, but it’s also become a popular hiking route along the geotrail.

Pro Tip: One can hire a cab from Sai kung town centre to reach here but returning is not very easy. It has amazing history of volcanic eruption in Hong Konk which is rare but accessibility is one tough task. However one can book the group tour with volcano discovery center HERE and save time and efforts to access this location.

Apart from above 6 mains spots, there are endless Hiking Trails and Beaches that can be accessed by renting boats from Sai Kung Pier or can be explored from one spot to another. Some more spots can be seen in the map below:

Where to Eat in Sai Kung?

There are many resturants from big to small in Town centre of Sai Kung which is just around Sai Kung Pier. For Jain Food, its best to pack up you own stuff. We genrally carry our own Chatni Sandwiches or Peanut butter sandwiches and some fruits and biscuits.

However one can get some options in:
1. Indian Restaurant named Jojo located at 21 Man Nin St, Sai Kung (Contact: +852 25747477)
2. Sawadee Thai Restaurant (must have tender coconut and fried spring rolls for jain food option) and for vegetarians there are offcourse many many options and my friends said its one of the best Thai Food resturant in HK. Located at No. 4, G/F, Saikung Garden, 16 Chan Man St, Sai Kung (Contact: 27916399)
3. There are many 7-eleven and Circle K in srrounding area from where one can grab chips, beverages, etc.

There might be more options that I may not be aware of so feel free to write in and I will add it up here. :)
Time for some Fresh lime juice shot for all!

A perfect break after long and tiring day!

ProTips: The Public washrooms near the pier are defintely not great options to use. So you may want to take quick tea or food break in one of the restaurants around and make use of washrooms before you start hike or head to beach from pier.

What are ideal tips and gears for hike?

Sorce: hongkongliving

ProTip: When you are going for combination of hike and beach. do carry your swimsuit, towel, wet wipes, snorkel gears (if going to some clean beaches of SaiKung), Band Aids and small medical kit is must have. Change clothes, small tent, enough food and water (more of food which can help you remain hydrated)

 Also please note,

1. Never go on a rock or landform appreciation trip alone or in adverse weather
2. Plan a safe trip with reference to the tidal information posted on the Hong Kong Observatory's website. Be aware that some coastal areas may not be accessible at all times.
3. Plan a route with a proper trail that ALL members of your group may reasonably handle.
4. Some islands and coastal areas may be difficult to access and are only suitable for boat trips. Avoid visiting them when strong easterly winds prevail.
5. Remain alert to changes in the surrounding environment and any potential hazards, such as rapids, cliffs and steep slopes. Exercise extra caution when rock surfaces are wet.
6. Do not climb the rock columns or trample on severely weathered or eroded surfaces. Watch out for shifting or slippery rocks.
7. Wear suitable hiking shoes, hats and clothes. Also take gloves, first-aid kits and weather-proof clothes with you.
8. Mobile phone coverage may vary from place to place. Leave details of your route and expected return time with someone, for raising the alarm if necessary.
9. Use only tour guides who have outdoor training and first-aid skills.
10. Use only boat operators who comply with all the safety requirements and have life jackets for all passengers.
11. Do not take away any rock, fossil, mineral or silt. It is an offence to dig up, damage or deface any rocks in Hong Kong.
12. Most of the paths may not be stroller and wheelchair friendly. So dont be too adventures while planning with babies or elders.
13. Keep extra phone battery always while reaching out to unknown territory.

Vibrant 852 - Day out at The Peak! (4 Mins Read)

...and suddenly we became part of the past... of this global village named Hong Kong. City that never sleeps!

Captured beautifully by J Mehta!

We are in Hong Kong for exactly 5 Years now and have seen tourist places with other friends or families visiting. But thanks to this special situation wherein you have no option to fly out but to stick in and around here. One tend to bring in fresh perspective. We look at brighter side of life and move ahead with whatever is in your plate, just enjoy!

Back in 2015 when we went for first time to 'The Peak', it was in October and it was rainy day and Mid Autumn festival time. We had queued  up for the Tram to the Peak for not less than 3 hours (had made best friends with group of Thai tourist student just before us :p) Let's agree it was tiring. We were not well read and didn't knew of alternative ways to reach The Peak. Another time we trekked to The Peak, it was rainy day and then again in July of 2018 it was clearly too many clouds out there and then it kept happening in many different occasions that we could not catch clear day while being on The Peak.

The Peak is like the place to be at if you wish to enjoy the 360 degree views of Hong Kong from the Peak building sky terrace. One side is beautiful formation of excellent concrete jungle with view of sea dividing Hong Kong Side and Kowloon side and just when you move from one end of terrace to another you will find this beautiful Sea view with magnificent mountains.

So here we re-start exploring same place but with different perspective. This time we ensured to check weather before hand. We checked for very sunny and clear day, thats whenfrom Tung Chung we can see almost Macau and Shenzhen :p that much clear day! and we headed for The Peak!

We spent good 7-8 hours on The Peak this time around enjoying every nook and corner of the place.

What is The Peak?

The Peak is a major tourist attraction today in Hong Kong with avg 7 million people visiting there every year (Pre-Covid times). However, Historically this was a place which was used by Britishers as residences due to its temperate climate and panoramic views. The funicular (now know as Peak Tram) was built in 1888 for accessibility to the place and then the demand for residences and tourism never looked back.

The Peak is the name of place, which has The Peak Tower which is the boat shaped building and the Peak Galleria which is major shopping mall with open terrace and few other entertainment places.

The Peak is also called Victoria Peak or Mount Austin. Its a hill on western half of Hong Kong Island with views of Central, victoria harbour, lamma island and few other islands. The Peak has elevation of 552m (1811 Ft.), which makes it highest hill on the Hong Kong island.

How to reach The Peak?

This can be really really a tricky question. :) For several reasons, but prime most being that there are many ways and means to reach the Peak.

Trekking from HKU MTR or from Central MTR till "The Peak"! It was wonderful experience minus some bruises :p

  • By Trekking:  It will take approximately 1-1.5 hours walk from MTR Central Station to The Peak Tower

Trekking Map Guide. Source: The Peak Website. Off course this is one of the way but there are ample of other treks which will lead you till The Peak.

  • By Minibus No.1 (In HK there is concept of different types of buses. minibus is small 16 seater bus with fewer stops and runs with rocket speed)

    • Location: Central (Two IFC) to The Peak
    • Time: Daily: 6:30am to 12:00am (from Central)  ; Daily: 7:10 am to 12:25 am (from The Peak)
    •  Frequency:10 to 12 minutes
    • Fare: HK$10.20 (as on Sept 2020)

By Route No. 15 (First Bus) Norma
    • Location: Central Pier 5 to The Peak
    • Time: Daily: 10:15am to 12:15am (from Man Kwong Street outside Central (Pier 5))   ;         Daily: 9:10 am to 1:00 am (from The Peak)
    • Frequency: 7 to 15 minute
    • Fare: HK$10.30
    • You may also click here to find update information from New World First Bus.

    By Taxi
    • Taxis are plentiful throughout Hong Kong apart from remote areas, and can be hailed on the street (except restricted areas) or summoned by phone. All are metered, relatively cheap, air-conditioned and clean.
    • We took Cab from A2 exit of Hong Kong station, just outside there is taxi stand there. It costed us approximately 65 HKD to and Fro till the The Peak.

If you are tourist or with tourist who love to see vintage Peak Tram then here is the final way or route to reach

By Walk - From MTR Central Station till Peak Tram Terminus
    • From MTR Central Station, make your way to the J2 exit and walk up to the ground level. Turn right, through Chater Garden, cross Queen's Road Central, and make your way up Garden Road. You will pass the Bank of China Tower and Three Garden Road on your left and St John's Cathedral on your right
    • It will take approximately 10-15 minutes’ walk from MTR Central Station to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus..

    Source: ThePeakWebsite

What to do at the Peak?

  • Again the answer varies from person to person. If we go with visitors, we take them to the Madamme Tussaud Museum or Trick eye museum ( the one at Peak galleria is closed now, there is smaller version in the Peak tower building at 1st floor free of cost), chocolate museum, do shopping, eat Gelatos and return back.
  • This time though, we spent good number of hours trolling around the nooks and corner. Started with The Peak Galleria Terrace from where one can see almost 270 degree views of Hong Kong. Little blocked the Peak tower. Then we went straight to The Peak Tower Sky Terrace (costed 52 HKD - payable by octopus per head or you can pre-book 2 days in advance on Klook website for some 10-15% discount).
  • The Views from The Sky terrace of both with Sun, during Sunset and after Sun set is magnificient. The Peak is at height and obviously its all about those mesmerizing views. We caught some breath taking videos of Sunsets and Night time skyline from Peak Galleria. (they have beautifully made benches there to sit and just relax while you watch sun settling down over mountains and Sea) and captured the daylight from The Sy Terrace.
  • We had in between wonderful time at Rajasthan Rifles having amazing Masala Chai. (More details to follow)
  • Someone who prefer having dinner or lunch with a view there are many resturant just 1 level below the sky terrace from where you can enjoy your food with a View.
  • And lastly, there are nature walks for about 40 -60 mins around the Peak which can be done to reach to the garden and small little waterfall area.
  • For more details about what to do at The Peak, visit the THE PEAK WEBSITE

How much is ideal time to spend on The Peak ?

  • The Peak has not only many options to reach but also many things "to do" or just sit and admire the views.
  • So ideal time after reaching The Peak could be anywhere between 4 hours to even 8 hours.
  • However, for people with short time in hand and just for the sake of quick view, just half an hour is also good enough.

Where to Eat at The Peak ?

  • There are many many many options of where one can eat in The Peak tower and in The Peak Galleria
  • Well, if going with kids do not forget to visit Candilicious ( Not Vegetarian, best to my understanding)
  • Dining options can be found here - Dining at The Peak Tower, Dining at the Peak Galeria.
  • The Peak Galleria has more options and many are budget friendly too.
    • We visited the Rajasthan Rifles where we were greeted by Mr Manish Malhotra (Many Indians will have their eyebrows raised :p).  No Not the Fashion Designer Manish. ;) Mr Manish of Rajasthan Rifles was such a sweetheart person.
    • We wanted to have only tea and some snacks like toast to go along. But he rather customized a bit of Jain Parathas for us to go with Tea and we were throughly surprised to know that they can provide Jain options for lunch and dinner as well (to non fussy guys :p )
    • Once i stepped inside this beautiful, colorful and vibrant restaurant, i was not sure should i see outside view or inside decor ;) The Ambience of Rajasthan Royals is one big treasure box of Indian flavors. So authentic wooden carvings, peacock and peahen adorably kept with the spirit of Rajasthan borders on their quotes and welcoming heart, this place took my heart away. And i am definitely longing to go back there. Their service, care and detailing simply made us fall in love with it.

With Amazing server - Mr Manish Malhotra. Good times at Rajasthan Rifles!

It was such a beautiful clear day, that we made most of it by going all over places and clicking best shots that we could. Jimit Carried his Newly maintenance did Canon 70D to click the shots and expriment with those lights, sunsets, night views and all!

We at The Peak! First perfect click with clear weather from The Peak! We carried Selfie Stick this time to strictly follow social distancing and getting clicked with timer on :p

Small cute little Photo Stop on The Sky Terrace of Peak Tower!

thats how The Tram to The Peak looks like!

My favourite most Sunset shots from Galleria Terrace
Just when it was perfect sun set, big cloud came in! Still making it a great shot!

Thats Viewing pavillion from you can get some great shots as well. Its straight walk from Rajasthan rifles for 2 mins and there you are!

We had almost whole day spent here, just mesmerized by the views this place has to offer. Its so beautiful and splendid. Its like poetry of any writer's imagination. Formation of cluster of buildings and Sea and mountains building up a view together to behold in eyes and etch in heart forever. The more i see you with different angle, the more i feel i am yet to see you, one can never be done too much with Dear HK!

Dream coming true - Art Jamming Session with Splashes Studio! (2 Mins Read)

This is where it all began....

"I dream my painting and then I paint my dream", Said Vincent Van Gogh!

I had a dream since many years now to hand paint a canvas which i can keep looking at with proud and which can become part of my living room forever and ever. One that you can show off with your sign and name that, heh, I made this!

P.S. i cannot draw or paint anything and except water colors till what 8th standard in school i dont remember A or Art.

This passion of having something made by me was re-ignited when I met this International Artist, class apart, who pours in emotions, thoughts and ultra creativity on canvas. And I knew I can ask her to help me with my dream, off course if she agrees. But i have no patience to go every day and create little art so after many to and fro moments for almost an year, here came the Art Jamming Session - which made perfect sense of learning something from Shweta. that too in couple of hours! Known her for a while as this Big Banner Artist, learning from her was not only an learning but it was a very great experience.

Shweta Rastogi, Splashes studio as Art Instructor was thorough professional and Fun to learn with. She bought in utmost comfort to holding paint brushes to learning strokes to helping gain confidence in coloring the canvas directly. We did couple Art Jamming and Jimit was total newbie here but this process he didn't only found it to be meditative but he just said "I was De-stressed". Thats something everyone needs right now and for me it was dream accomplished. I happily flaunt my canvas in my living room already :)

Art Jamming Session with Shweta Rastogi, Splashes Studio"

Where was the session?

Very much at her Residence at Discovery Bay which when we stepped in looked like Art studio in itself from very very beautiful Paintings depicting emotions, spiritual touch, love, passion, commitment and detailing, intricacy and clearly too much hard work to her love of portraying Art through utilities and even furniture... Its a Dream Home for sure and for us those 3 hours of Art Jamming Session!

Do we need to know art, painting, coloring, sketching beforehand to be eligible?

Absolutely not, we were total newbie and thoroughly enjoyed and learned in process.

How long was the session?

In all, it takes around 3 hours or little more here and there.

What did we paint?

We were group of 3 people for this session and Shweta as Art instructor had already prepared a demo art for our session that day and we all had to follow her instructions to make that demo painting.

Was it difficult as newbie?

It did feel scary at beginning to see such a big canvas and how and what are we going to be doing with it, but once the instructions started flowing. It no longer was about art, painting, or anything else. It was therapeutic, you belong to that canvas and you just start doing things and enjoy the process.

How much does it cost?

Well, its very subjective from session to session and number of people in session. So its best to be in touch with Shweta about it. But it includes best quality Canvas and Art material which will make your painting yours forever! For more information on this one can contact Shweta directly -  Splashes Studio, Shweta Rastogi Details

Who is Shweta Rastogi?

Shweta is a renowned Indian & International artist based in Hong Kong. Her works are inspired by her beliefs in spirituality, emotions and social issues. Being a self-taught learner has helped her expanding creativity and breaks the boundaries of conventional structured learning. More details about Shweta can be found here: Splashes Studio, Shweta Rastogi Details

Can we see the painting you made?

Offcourse, this blog is all for showing off what we could create :)

What is the takeaway from this Art Jamming?

Well literally, one takes away a great experience filled with colors in one canvas holding it tightly to your self and making it yours forever. Our painting as couples are similar since it was Art jamming but we are happily going to gift one to our family back in India and that's gonna keep two walls in two different cities alive with vibrating  beautiful colors. Just can't thank Shweta enough for this exploding memorable session! and hopefully may join again sometime :p i dont mind now filling up all my walls with this hand made little creations!

Jimit Says: - It was a different feel, sort of sense of achievement that he could do this, create something of this sort. And he never thought he would, but he did thoroughly enjoy!

Anubha Says:- It was very amazing experience and very refereshing too. Well Anubha was totally in awe there and there itself, i could see that totally!

Some more pictures from our session:

We were almost merged in canvas and colors by 1st hour in the session!

The Team for Art Jamming - Anubha, Myself and Jimit with Art Instructor - Shweta Rastogi

What is this? Well these elephants have a long story of from where they came and in which condition but the fantastic artist that Shweta is, she helped me tranform them into very authentic temple like Elephants!

So this is what i was talking about. This small little library / lounge sort of area in my house which had plain white wall forever is now displaying my dream, my hand made painting thanks to this Art Jamming session!
